When do I need a certified translation of a Transcript of Records?

If you would like to spend a semester / year at a foreign university, you will need a certified translation of your Transcript of Records (usually into English, sometimes into French, Spanish or Italian) as proof of your academic achievements to date. Based on the courses you have taken so far, the university abroad can assess whether your previous knowledge is sufficient to study at the host university.

After returning from abroad, the German university again requires a German translation of your Transcript of Records as proof of the academic achievements made abroad in order to be able to recognize academic achievements in the foreign country (see Recognition of academic achievements made abroad).
