When do you need a certified translation of an identity card?

For example, you will need a certified translation of your identity card:

• When starting a course of study in Germany or abroad (all documents, including identification documents such as the identity card, must be submitted or uploaded both in the original language and in the version translated by an approved sworn translator, e.g. into German; see information on the application process for foreign students of the University of Stuttgart). For matriculation / enrollment at a German / foreign university you may also need a certified translation of the following documents: secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur), school report, or university transcript.
• In case of marriage of foreign nationals for submission to the registry office (see information of the state of Baden-Württemberg on marriage in case of foreign nationality of a fiancé).In this context, you may also need a certified translation of the following documents: birth certificate, certificate of no impediment to marriage.
